What Is the U.S. Center for SafeSport?

The U.S. Center for SafeSport is an independent nonprofit organization responsible for investigating and resolving allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse in Olympic and Paralympic sports. As a volunteer or coach, you will be familiar with this as the training you are required to participate in annually. The center was created to ensure that athletes can participate in sports free from all forms of abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

Types of Cases Heard By the U.S. Center for SafeSport

The center has jurisdiction over a wide range of cases involving Olympic and Paralympic athletes, coaches, and officials accused of sexual misconduct or abuse, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse, including verbal. 

Sexual harassment can involve any unwanted or unwelcome sexual advances or behaviors, while sexual assault refers to any non-consensual sexual contact or touching. Other forms of abuse that the center can investigate include emotional and physical abuse, such as bullying, intimidation, and physical harm.

The U.S. Center for SafeSport also has the authority to investigate and sanction individuals who have engaged in misconduct outside of the sports environment if the allegations relate to conduct that occurred within the scope of a coach, athlete, or official’s role in the sport. 

For example, if an individual who is a coach, athlete, or official within a sport is accused of sexual harassment outside of the sports environment, the center can still investigate the allegations if they relate to the individual’s role within the sport.
